fabricating futures
an installation at the Roll Up Project in downtown Oakland, CA, October 8 - November 24, 2021.
about “fabricating futures”:
Out in the world, a lot of the time I’m defending myself against the present, and suffering the past.
In the studio, I’m fabricating futures.
Sometimes, working on a piece, I feel like I’m looking up and out – open to some imagined future or other – looking forward with hope.
Not that these sculptures are in any way specific to any issue or politic. Their simple forms and surfaces embody, or aspire to some positive, forward-looking attitude.
They are not representing anything, or telling a story – they’re appealing to the viewer’s innate kinship in the wild world we share.
And by “wild”, I mean not just wilderness, but the ever-accelerating tech world we’ve built, too, and all the rest,
and what we haven’t discovered, suffered through, or understood yet.
